Que a felicidade não seja apenas um sorriso no semblante...
Mas tbém um brilho no olhar, um abraço apertado, um grito ao vento, uma luz no relento, uma corrida ao nada, uma música cantanda, um motivo ou nada!
kitties like strawberries too 😋
"Hadn't I thoughts, after all? A mind of my own? It cannot be infamy, I reasoned, to run or seek after glory, to love perfection, desire praise.... My own quill went marching across the page. I rejected any clocklike vision of the world." -- Danielle Dutton, Margaret the First
Books such as this are the reason I love historical fiction. I never deliberately learned anything about Margaret Cavendish before and now I want to learn everything about her. A 17th century noble woman, Margaret created works of philosophy and science fiction (instead of, like the other women in her circle, children) and moved around in exile with her surprisingly supportive husband. Witnessing her overcome the idea that her words and thoughts don't matter and struggle with her ambition is uncanny and triumphant. And to think she didn't have an education!
The spirit of Virginia Woolf -- who mentions Cavendish in A Room of One's Own -- welcomingly pervades the pages. Danielle Dutton's writing is gorgeous. And it was nice to find myself again in Stuart England, a place I've found mostly in history texts rather than fiction.
