FWC has some great ongoing research with the endangered Florida bonneted bat. #flwildlife#flbats#Repost @fwcresearch
The Florida bonneted bat (Eumops floridanus) is endemic to Florida and is one of the rarest mammals in North America. Less than a dozen roosts of Florida bonneted bats are known, and most are in artificial bat houses on the Babcock-Webb Wildlife Management Area in Charlotte County. The FWC and University of Florida are conducting a study at Babcock-Webb to determine the size and composition of roosting colonies, environmental factors affecting roosting activity, breeding season dates and patterns of movements of bats between roosts. To do this, the team captures bats three times per year (April, August, December) as they leave the bat houses. The bats are marked with very small microchips called PIT tags, and each bat house in the study area is fitted with an automatic PIT reader that records the individual identification number of the bat and detects the tags as bats enter or leave the houses. During the capture sessions, bats are caught in mist nets so researchers can also determine the age and sex, record body measurements and assess the overall health of the colony. The bats are counted as they exit the houses in the evening, and any flightless young remaining in the houses are also counted. The data collected during this study will help improve conservation and management efforts for this imperiled species. Two years ago today I was able to participate in styling our model for our cover and editorial shoot for the Spring 2015 "Time" edition of Orange and Blue Magazine. This serves as a great reminder that one day, maybe I'll get to do this everyday in my career.
It's not too late to apply for the Research in Environmental Toxicology residential summer program! During the program, high school students will work with UF researchers in the field and lab to develop a proposal to investigate principles of environmental toxicology. (All while living at UF! Chomp, chomp!) Link for more information is in our bio! #uf#stemeducation#scienceoutreach
I love that @earthfare is getting new @foragerproject goodies. Get your greens while getting your chip on! Earth Fare also has the Roots and Beets flavors as well. They're #vegan , #glutenfree and #cornfree . Chip on! 🍴💗 #gainesvillevegans
