Free day on #30daysofhairstyles . "But Jane—you're always wearing your hair up. What's the point of having long hair for that?"
I've never gotten that question, but I've mused on it quite often. Rarely do I wear my hair in its full length outside of a home situation. Obviously part of this is practicality—hair past your tailbone gets caught in straps, zippers, etc. Okay. But why don't I cut it? Because I like the length. Not only is it some sort of strange secret, something that I get to keep for myself and very few people know or remember, but my length is a very good compensation for my thickness, something that no amount of hair extensions will solve the way length will. And I like my hair long—it makes me feel beautiful and feminine, and I think it's one of the very few aspects of human anatomy that remains relatively non-hypersexualized. •
And, perhaps you don't realise, but my immediate family doesn't actually like my hair long. My mom and dad have both repeatedly suggested I should cut my hair. They forget, often, what it is when I wear it up, so I get to keep my hair with no complaint. •
So that, in sum is why I wear my hair up. Perhaps the length is only vanity, and wearing it up is practicality, but I would humbly beg that I have both. Because there are very few things in my life I have control over, so this is one of them.
