For the first time in several months it feels good to go back to a place because it feels like home. I have found some work, a place to live, and great community and friendships though my business. The Gold Coast is definitely feeling like home ❤️ #followthesun#snapperrocks#surfing#australia#workingholiday

Ogoh Ogohs. These ferocious beings parade the streets of Bali on Nyepi Eve (the eve of the Balinese New Year or Ngrupuk). They symbolize negative energies from all living things. Balinese philosophy honors the relationships between the divine, human beings, and nature. Ritual showcases this even more.
Not-so-ironically, some of the ogoh ogohs in Ubud tonight bore an uncanny resemblance to the bules I see walking around. Banjar communities spend more than a month constructing the ogoh ogohs. During parades, they are held up and shook to confuse evil spirits so that they go away and cease to harm human beings. Ogoh ogohs then are burned as a symbol of self-purification.
I've never seen anything like this in western tradition, besides the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, but THAT is tame compared to what I experienced tonight. I imagine tonight to be like the Burning Man of the East, except with family and with way less privilege. Everything seemed so naturally "Bali." The children, even very young ones, were not afraid at all. A really special celebration to watch and be a part of. I think I finally feel the magic of Bali.
