White Spotted Sable Moth on Salvia sylvestris (Meadow Sage)
This beautiful little guy can be found here in the Northeast and Canada. Goldenrod is the host plant for caterpillars! This was my first encounter thanks to the township for cutting back on mowing our woodsy streets.
Cetonia Aurata, or the Green Rose Chafer, is one of the most beautiful European beetles due to his iridescent green colour 💚 A bit of googling revealed that Chafer is a Middle English word meaning ‘to gnaw’, used to describe feeding habits of these beetles. They eat out the inner parts of the flowers, and therefore are often considered a pest: the damaged flowers get brown, and cannot produce fruits or berries. Luckily, there are only a few of them when the gardens bloom; mass attack of these beetles starts when there are fruits already, so only decorative and wild flowers suffer.
