Around the village of Shoaibiyeh
In April 2016, heavy rain led to the opening of gates of the Dez dam in Khuzestan province, south-west Iran. The resulting deluge flooded several villages within 30km in the counties of Dezful and Shush, and destroyed a bridge in Shoaibiyeh district of Shushtar county, 65 km away. Nearly 500,000 acres of agricultural lands were destroyed, 1000 head of cattle lost, and 7,000 people displaced for a week.
In Shoaibiyeh, residents argue the Imam Khomeini agro-industrial sugarcane company, based in Shoaibiyeh, Shushtar, is partly to blame for building levees to divert any sudden heavy flow of water away from its plantation towards other agricultural land.
