Classic Album Of The Day:
Sergio Mendes "The Beat Of Brazil" You ever hear music that you grew up on after a long, long period of not hearing it, and you may have forgotten it completely, but as soon as it comes on your mind clicks in and before you can process it you are singing the words or the melody without even knowing how it's happening. It's like your mouth is doing the singing and you're just listening like, "Oh yeah!" And THEN you really start to remember everything. Every line, every song, every break, every solo, every note? Scenes pop up where it was the soundtrack - road trips, washing dishes, playing with friends, doing chores - long forgotten life moments? That record is this record for me. It's my Dad's music. He bought the cassette when we lived overseas in Germany. I was probably 6 or 7 and heard it constantly. It must've been one of his favorites. It was a straight up jazz record from Mendes - no cool cocktail party vocals in Brazilian versions of current hits - which is how I already understood Mendes from other albums we had from his group 'Brazil 66', and I remember being disappointed about that...but not for long. He does versions of some Jobim hits that I already knew, and I locked in on them. But this was jazz. It was full on "le jazz hot" with great arrangements by Mendes and Jobim, and though instrumental, we sang the words or the melody to the joints we knew. I grew to love this record and it had a big part in introducing me to the joys of jazz. It's not a searing jazz shakedown but it is authentic and straight ahead. It's melodic, rhythmic and when the joints need to burn they burn hot with great playing by an all Brazilian cast of musicians. This is another one that built me into who I am. After loving it so, hearing other jazz efforts was easy, and understanding what I was hearing allowed me to move into the genre on my own, eager to hear and learn more... this one is cool for a small, intimate gathering or aloud crowd of strangers in your house talking, laughing and drankin' booze. Either works for me cause everything on here is my happy place - every spin of the vinyl, every drop of the needle. #BBSCAOTD
