Rajasthan Tales-Meet Babli Bai. The Matriarch of the ‘Bhil’ tribal household that hosted us for three days in a small tribal hamlet called Kuran. Her husband passed away many years back and she managed to raise all her seven children by herself. The handsome old lady had a beatific smile that revealed her stained teeth in all their grandeur and she always smiled along with a friendly grunting sound. It was almost something in between a smile and a laugh. I was amused by this at first. But later realised that this special smile probably was reserved for us, the strangers who had landed up. The sound was just to hide the awkwardness of our presence, especially in the absence of a common language.
The household had zero access to water. The women did a couple of rounds (balancing huge matkas on their heads) in the day to the community hand pump located ten minutes away. #worldwaterday @charitywaters #humansofny#storytelling#colours_of_Rajasthan#storiesofindia
