🕍San Niccolò oltr’Arno⛪️
The structure of this belfry is similar to the ones which were built in the 13th/14th centuries in Florence. But this one has a specific story connected with the famous siege of Florence 1529/30. Imperial troops in coalition with the Medici interested to get back their power in Florence, made the population of Florence suffer from hunger and illnesses. Michelangelo at that time responsible for the successful defense fortifications on the hill, had to flee after the capitulation of the Republic fearing the vengeance of the Medici. The prior of San Lorenzo, where he had just finished the monuments in the Medici chapel, offered him the perfect refuge: a small room under the sanctuary of the Medici-family. The day he went down from San Miniato, the noise of imperial troops in search of him came closer. His friends pushed him into San Niccolò sopr’Arno where the priest was already waiting to hide him until dawn at the belfry of San Niccolò sopr’Arno. In the darkness Michelangelo hurried to San Lorenzo.
