So with Ben Affleck being said to want to back away from being Batman and with the poor reception of some of the recent movies of the DCEU they are starting to think of rebooting the DCEU all together. For some people this can either be bad or good. I know I'm in the unpopular opinion mark but I actually haven't really found any of the recent movies too bad. I actually really enjoyed Suicide Squad and I thought that the other two movies weren't necessarily all that bad. They definitely weren't perfect though. What are your thoughts on the situation? Should they keep on going or reboot the DCEU?
Paul Thomas Anderson convinced the studio that this would work as nearly a three hour movie and he sold me too. There are a lot of shots that linger and never cut away from something nor do the angles change very often, but it's for a good reason; to give the film that '70s feel. Honestly, I don't think it would have worked if it were shot like a standard movie of the' 90s. The movie's real strength is in the performances, which are fantastic, for the lack of a better word. I don't know how to quite explain it, other than there's something real genuine about them and it feel real. I especially like the acting and dialogue during the porn scenes, which apparently were taken from actual adult films. The characters are interesting, so much so that you're willing to spend three hours with them and each one has an arch. I also have to mention the aesthetics of the film, both the wardrobe and the soundtrack. Each represent the time period the movie takes place, the late '70s to the early' 80s and mixed with the cinematography, it almost feels like an actual movie of that time. There's a scene in particular that's showing everyone's downfall, decline or something happening and throughout this sequence which is about 20 minutes long, I believe, the music is just this low droning sound with a soft kick here and there and the whole time it's really intense. It ends on a bright note, which is kinda how you'd want it to. I also like how there's mention of John Holmes even though Dirk's life mirrors similar events. Sort of surreal that way. This is an incredible and interesting film, both as a movie and behind the scenes. #nowwatching#nowplaying#boogienights#paulthomasanderson#markwahlberg#johncreilly#burtreynolds#juliannemoore#williamhmacy#ninahartley#newlinecinema#drama#90sdrama#dvd#dvdreview#moviereview#moviecritic#filmreview#filmcritic#cinephile#1997
